VBPS
My European travel photo book, focusing solely on the charming city of Marburg, should have arrived almost a week ago, just before I left for a short trip half-a-thousand kilometres from home.
But it arrived a day too late and I was not around to receive it, which meant, firstly, that I had to wait nearly a week to get my hands on it; and, secondly, that I am most thankful to my neighbours for holding it for me all this while.
Photo book quality, workmanship and overall experience
In a sentence, I am more than pleased with Photojaanic’s work in printing and binding my photobook. The glossy photopaper is of considerably good quality, the stitch is tight and well-bound, and the book feels solid. The linen is superior and the dust jacket has a rich feel to it. For the price, the quality and my experience as a customer are both sky high. The only change between the flash builder and the final book is that the photographs seem more contrasty: perhaps more a paper factor than a printing one. Also, the font sizes are a lot bigger than you would expect; and while my 12pt size preference did not turn out to be too monstrous, I would probably go in for 10 or even 8pt next time.
Re-thinking: papers v. monitors
One of my first reactions on seeing my photographs in print was that I must re-think my approach to cleaning up photographs. These works of art have a different feel on paper and all that attention we pay to noise and aberration on screen simply lose meaning at these dimension of print and gain an unheard-of charisma. My conclusion was that noise cleaning, aberration stripping and general zooming into 100% were all overrated results of constantly improved technology available to us. Unless you plan on blowing your photographs up to billboard sizes, it is time to stop worrying about noise and start worrying about other elements of your photography.
I am not putting up specific photographs here so as not to give the photographs away, but the glimpses I have provided should prove to be interesting to anybody looking to make a photo book of their own work. It comes at a price, but there is hardly anything to regret after the fact. As for me, something tells me this is only the first of many such photo books to come! P.S. If photojaanic.com does give me some sort of discount coupon/code, I will put it up here so do check back soon.
